Twenty-four

“What the fuck do you expect?” I snap at her.

“What do you want, Jared?” She looks at the pavement, at the trees that boarder the sidewalk, at the cars that drive by, anywhere but at me.

“Look at me when I’m talking to you,” I growl. “You owe me that at least.”

“I don’t owe you anything,” She hisses, “I owe you nothing.”

“You owe me everything,” I reply, “Everything, Violet.”

She shakes her head, laughing manically, “Is that what you think?”

“You think I want to look at a picture of you every day I’m in that house?” I say, “You think I want a constant reminder of everything we had?”

“Leave me alone, Jared. We both care about your brother, lets just leave it at that, yeah?” She turns away from me and begins to walk away. That’s her escape I realise. She just walks away. Things get tough, she walks away, things don’t go her way, she walks away.

“You deserve this,” I shout to her, “You deserve all the shit!”

She just flips me the middle finger without turning to me, continuing on her merry way down the sidewalk back to town.

“Yeah well, fuck you too,” I mumble to myself, heading back to the house.

“You’re a cruel bastard, you know that,” Eli says, settling himself back into the cushions whilst a game plays on the screen.

“Yeah, I know,” I rub the back of my neck as I stand, leaning against the doorframe.

“Why are you doing it then?” He asks.

“Watch the game, Eli,” I tell him, heading over to the one loveseat in the room at the foot of the bed.

“No, I want to talk about this, Jared,” Eli turns the TV off, “Did you know she loved you?”

I shrug, “She didn’t love me.”

“Yes, she did, Jared,” Eli says quietly. “More than you realise. That’s why she left. Because she loved you, because she thought if she were by your side, she would hold you back and you wouldn’t be where you are today.”

I snort, “Bullshit.”

“It’s true, Jared.”

I’m suddenly too restless to sit still, so I jump up from the loveseat and pace at the bottom of the bed.

“Even if it were true, Elijah, we’re done. I don’t care about Violet, anymore. I only care about hurting her the way she hurt me.”

Eli scoffs, “That’s a complete contradiction and you know it.”

“Whatever, if she loved me, she would never have left, fuck this holding me back bullshit, she would have fought for me.”

“She spoke to me that night,” He says softly, “The night before she left you that is. She asked me if I thought she would hold you back.”

I snap my head to him, “What?”

“She asked me if I thought she would hold you back. Do you know what I said?”

I shake my head, my heart in my throat.

“I said that no matter what happened in your career it would always come second to her. I told her she would hold you back.”

“It doesn’t matter, Eli,” I yell, “It doesn’t fucking matter because she left.
