MCIU Offices, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire

Andy Wills was the last of the supervisors to arrive for the meeting in Danny’s office. Danny had called the meeting to discuss the latest developments and to consider how he could move the two inquiries forward.

He knew it was only a matter of time before something else happened that would require an investigation by the MCIU and, with Potter already breathing down his neck about the Margaret White murder and the abduction inquiry, progress needed to be made.

He leaned back in his chair and said, ‘Now that we’re all here, let’s make a start. Rob, how are you getting on with the attempted abduction in Worksop?’

‘We’ve conducted all the follow-up inquiries and nothing that’s come up so far will take us any further. We’re still no closer to identifying either the vehicle or the offender.’

It wasn’t what Danny wanted to hear. He looked at Andy and said, ‘I understand you saw somebody last night who called in with information following the press appeal. Anything useful?’

‘Yes, boss. I think it could be very significant. I went to see a young couple who had seen a man in Beckett Wood who fitted the description of the offender from the Worksop job. More importantly, they saw him in Beckett Wood around six o’clock on the morning of the fifth.’

‘The same day Fiona Wright was found on the railway track.’

‘Exactly. Angela Reid is meeting with a police artist at Retford police station at two o’clock this afternoon. Hopefully, the artist will be able to give us a decent impression of the man she saw.’

‘Did they see a vehicle that morning?’

‘No, they didn’t. But that doesn’t mean a vehicle wasn’t there.’

Danny was thoughtful for a moment, then he looked at Rob and said, ‘Can you bring in the maps prepared by Jag and Phil?’

‘Give me a minute.’

Rob left the office, returning a few minutes later. He spread the Ordnance Survey map on Danny’s desk and said, ‘Beckett Wood is in the centre.’

There was a large circle drawn on the map, which signified the thirty-five-minute drive time from where the dog had lost the trail in Beckett Wood.

Danny studied the map. He could see numerous farms and outbuildings, as well as three small villages, all within the confines of the roughly drawn circle.

‘How long would it take us to visit every property within that circle?’

Rob puffed out his cheeks and said, ‘That’s a vast undertaking. Just visiting all the outlying farms would be huge; to incorporate the three small villages would be massive.’

‘We need to take the initiative; we’re running out of time. I don’t want to wait until this lunatic tries to snatch another woman off the streets. Have the Special Operations Unit completed all the house-to-house inquiries for the Margaret White murder?’

Tina said, ‘Yes, boss.’

‘Good. Rob, I want you to see what staff the SOU can provide and then draw up an operational order to search that area.’

‘All of it?’

‘No. Let’s prioritise the farms and outlying cottages first.
