âDonât think you can stay away from me forever, little crow,â Jack Skelton said, breathing down my neck.
I couldnât help flinching. Getting to potions and charms class early had done little to ease the headache Iâd woken up with from lack of sleep. Not a chance I would get such luck. The cretin licked his lips as he looked down my dress front.
âTry me,â I said through clenched teeth. What I wouldnât give to show him my exact sentiments, which involved a blade and two pieces of his anatomy. Jack only chuckled and sauntered to the back as other students began to trickle in to class.
My head was pounding and I tried to ignore him just as much as I was choosing to ignore whatever weird dreams Iâd conjured up last night. Massaging my temples did nothing to assuage the beating in my head. Surely the lack of sleep couldnât be the only contributor. Maybe it was the shift of seasons? Strong black tea this morning had barely touchedâ
Books slammed onto the table beside me and I flinched from the noise. Again. Oh, Regina looked as if her shoes were on too tight. She glared down her pretty upturned nose at me and with a sniff sat at the other end of the table. She was mad at me. I rolled my eyes. Probably about Achoris and I didnât care. Like I could control what he did or the company he kept.
Grimacing, I cupped my face in my palms to block the light and my potions partner. Our table was a bubble of silence stretching tight around us while the rest of the class was forming. The scratch of Reginaâs pen on the desktop raked against my ears until I couldnât take it anymore.
âLook, itâs not what you thinkââ
âI distinctly remember in our first conversation telling you to stay away from Achoris.â Regina cut me off with a hiss. âAre you a man-stealing tart as well as a liar?â
I sat bolt upright. âI have done nothing of the kind.â
Her eyes swirled bright blue as she touched her magic and a thin smile touched her lips, but before she could speak Professor Forsythe called the class to order.
Potions did not go well.
My magic dwindled in fits and starts. Regina wasnât talking to me and I was sure she wasnât minding the cauldron to keep it from boiling over. Her dumb bird hadnât even woken up from its nap in her hair to help. We soaked our kindling to the point of restarting, twice.
âRegina, are you a water witch or just being a bitch today?â I said when the water boiled over the top of our cauldron for the second time.
âOh, you want my assistance?â She smirked, looking up from her nails. âMaybe you better listen to me from now on.â
âI thought you at least would be serious about potions.â I tilted my head back at Lettie and that lowlife.
âA hiccup. Just like your magic it seems,â she said and gave a noncommittal shrug, âI can afford to have one low grade.
