Russian Siege
Northern Russia
âBloody hell, itâs freezing,â I remarked, pulling my coat closer as I concentrated and worked a little Magic, warming the air around me.
âWeâre in Russia, in the Far North,â Adina stated, giving me a look. âWhat did you expect?â
I felt like there was an unsaid word at the end of that sentence, like âidiotâ or something.
âI knew it would be cold, but I didnât thinkâ¦â I stopped as Rebecca joined Adina in staring at me with an incredulous look. âYeah, alright, fair point. Iâll shut up.â
Rebecca nodded and returned to looking over the building's side, down to the walled compound and large house that it sat within. We were up in the wilds somewhere, well away from any large city or population centre. This was the middle of nowhere, with just a couple of roads coming into town that snaked off through the winter tundra to other distant towns and villages. I could see hills and mountains in the distance, hemming us in, increasing that feeling of isolation.
The town itself was a bleak, communist looking backwater that seemed to have been left to rot, forgotten by the wider world, allowing the cancerous Nomads at the town's core to take root.
They had bled the place dry, and the only greenery I could really see was in the well-maintained compound, guarded by armed security. With my Aetheric Sight, I could clearly make out the Aegis that surrounded the entire place, just inside the walls, preventing us from appearing directly in the grounds themselves.
Instead, weâd chosen the tallest, nearest building to get a good look at it.
âSo we know what weâre doing?â Rebecca asked.
âYes,â Adina replied.
âI do,â I added.
âGood. Any questions? No? Alright, then letâs get this done.â
I nodded, giving the compound one last look before I moved to follow Rebecca down the fire escape. Sheâd been just what Iâd expected her to be. Focused, dedicated, and professional, and sheâd quickly taken a leading role organising this attack, and that was fine by me.
I could fight when I needed to, but I wasnât a tactician. Adina was better at that kind of thing than I was, and she watched Rebecca with keen interest, asking questions and clarifying points when she needed to.
Reaching the street, we jogged through several back alleys and crossed a couple of streets before coming to one side of the compound, away from busy main roads. The plan was relatively simple, with only this first part having been fully worked out.
âAtticus,â Rebecca said, looking over at me. âYouâre up.â
âOn it,â I replied and focused on the Aegis. It looked like it had been here a while, making it a fairly solid barrier, but it wasnât strong by any measure. I took a few seconds to centre myself, taking a few cleansing breaths, before I reached out and tested the edges of the Aegis. I used my Magic to pluck at the woven Essentia, pulling at the threads to see if it set off any alarms, but so far, nothing.
