Chapter 10 – Rosaline

She was lost.

That was the only conclusion Rosaline could draw, as the lightening sky started to illuminate the increasingly more sparse suburban streets she was walking down. She hadn’t seen anyone yet—it was still very early in the morning, and she assumed most people were still in bed. On the plus side, it meant that nobody from the bar was chasing her down… not yet, anyway. On the negative side, it meant there had been nobody to ask about a hardware store or some way to get the collar off.

And she was worried she was walking in the wrong direction. She didn’t know much about Florida, but from what she could remember, there was an enormous national park at the southernmost tip. What if she stumbled into the wilderness? Without the ability to shift, she’d be in serious danger if any kind of wildlife took an interest in her. And she didn’t have a phone to call for help, either. She gritted her teeth, her hands rising to the metal collar for what felt like the thousandth time that day. If only she was strong enough to just rip it off her body… her hands tensed as she tried. And failed.

Had she been a bit hasty in fleeing from the bar? Maybe she should have stayed around a little, tried to find out where Reed kept the keys to the collars. Sure, it would have been risky… but if she’d been able to shift, she might have been able to break the other four women out as well, and they would all have been able to escape, not just her. She couldn’t help but feel guilty as she walked, thinking of them still trapped back there. But guilt wasn’t a useful emotion. It wouldn’t help them get free any faster if she was tearing herself up about not being trapped with them. If anything, it should give her all the more reason to figure out how to get the damn collar off…

She yelped in pain as the collar burned suddenly red-hot against her skin. Too much thinking about shifting—her body had tried to transform. With a frustrated sigh, she dropped to sit on the curb of the street she was walking down, full of frustration. A part of her had been hoping that the collars were battery-powered or something… that she’d be able to shift again if she just waited it out. But the collar was just as powerful as it had ever been. Well, nothing for it. She’d need to find a hardware store.

There was a sound behind her—still on high alert from her escape attempt, she rocketed to her feet and spun around. She realized as she turned that the sound had been the unlatching of a side gate, attached to the unassuming suburban home she’d sat down outside of. There was a woman standing in the gate, her head tilted curiously to the side. Human, Rosaline noticed—an older human woman. Well, older for a human, at any rate.
