3 Design Process

The project ran for nine weeks in the spring of 2019 as an end-of-year project in the Master‘s in Information Architecture and Innovation at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS), Jönköping University, part of a course on “Digital transformation and renewal”.

The entire project was set up to be student-driven and since the majority of the students were already familiar with Gray’s game-inspired design process [13] from previous courses, his simple diverge-emerge-converge model was used as the implicit structure followed throughout development (Fig. 4). Gray compares the three phases to the way games play out and argues that “the first act opens the world”: sets the stage, introduces the players, develops “the themes, ideas, and information that will populate (the) world”. The second act allows us to “explore and experiment with the themes (…) develop(ed) in act one”. The third act is where conclusions are drawn and solutions generated.
