Liquidity streams coming into the Economic Box are finished products, assets (stocks, bonds, etc.), incurred debt, and export revenue, respectively, much as liquid water is fed to a boiler. Liquidity streams going out include liquidity to the Society Box and liquidity streams including debt payments, import payments, and “blowdown” liquidity (cost of government or as we all know, taxes) much as liquid water streams from the boiler system.

When we think of liquidity simply as money streams, it does not make sense that one stream of one million dollars would have a higher value than another stream of one million dollars. However, we know that one million dollars in the hands of a home builder may result in new houses for sale, whereas one million dollars in the hands of a government bureaucrat may lead to several file cabinets or computer servers’ worth of useless paperwork.

We can illustrate this with the enthalpy concept. The enthalpy or heat content of 1 lb of liquid water at 212 °F is approximately 180 BTU/lb assuming an arbitrary starting point of liquid water at 32 °F and a constant heat capacity of 1 BTU/lb °F (sorry, metric fans, it’s what I’m used to). A British Thermal Unit (BTU) is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 lb of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit. For simplicity, about 1000 BTU per lb of water is needed to convert the liquid water at 212 °F (1 atmosphere pressure) to steam at 212 °F and same pressure. The enthalpy of the steam resulting from boiling is now approximately 1180 BTU/lb. Therefore, having the same mass does not equate to having the same energy. The same can be applied to our energy concept for liquidity, value.

Higher enthalpy says that we can obtain more heat and/or work per unit of mass with steam than we can per unit mass of liquid water; higher-value liquidity then makes it possible to take more actions which create more opportunity. People respond more enthusiastically when their efforts are valued.

Going back to the dimensions developed in the Society Box, we can use the enthalpy concept to understand the slope of the SOL, “a”. On the independent variable axis, M, we are measuring our “mass” component, Moral Consequence, and on the dependent variable axis, O, we are measuring our “energy” component, Fairness, as measured by Opportunity. So, in this sense, the units of “a” are energy per mass.

Above we used units of BTU(energy)/lb(mass) to show the enthalpy of the mass of water in different states. It follows that “a” measures the “enthalpy” or Fairness content of a “mass,” Moral Consequence. Using this unit analysis, we can go back to Figure 6.3 showing our SOL force and moment balance to then deduce the relationship between the Force of Productivity and the slope of the SOL.

From equation 5.1, we have the definition of the SOL:

In unit terms, we have a in energy per mass, M as mass, so aM units are energy/mass x mass = energy.
