ON THE GRID

FARM SOME FISH IN YOUR BACK YARD A plastic kiddie pool can make for a great micro fish farm for your urban or off-grid homestead, plus it’s fairly easy for you to set up. Fill the pool with water. If it’s chlorinated, then just let it sit for about a week to evaporate from the water before you finish the setup and add in your fish. Put in the pool’s filter, minus any disinfecting elements such as chlorine tablets or salt. Then set up your filter’s discharge hose to spray water up in the air a short distance to help aerate the pool. Purchase some catfish, tilapia, or other hardy species from your local agricultural supplier. Then just add them to the pool, feed them daily, and watch them grow until they’re ready to catch. If you happen to be living in an area that stays above freezing during the winter months, you can even run this operation year-round.
