Chapter 20
Ron
I SAT AT THE TABLE in Malisana's trailer, writing ideas on how to rebuild the food supply in the city and in the castle while also eliminating waste and improving the economy. What I wanted to do instead was to cozy up to Malisana while she was sorting laundry. I set the pen aside and moved to the couch. There wasnât a lot of clothes to fold, but I helped anyway. We should probably get some hangers for the princess dresses.
âHow did you manage to raise such well-behaved kids? I had never seen a five-year-old who could sit for hours drawing or learning how to write.â And the rest of the time, Harigan was playing the adult and taking care of Siliria.
Malisana shrugged. âI didnât really do anything special. On the farm, they helped me plant and harvest. Harigan and I would turn soil, and Siliria would throw seeds down because it was easy enough for someone that young to do. Now Iâm writing, and sheâs writing right along with me.â
It made sense. âSo they learned from a good example. Then theyâll grow up to be as awesome as their mom.â
Malisanaâs cheeks reddened, and she looked down. I cupped her face and turned it toward me.
With a nervous laugh, she said, âYou donât have to help me with the laundry. Itâs very nice of you to do it, though.â
I tilted her head and lowered my lips to hers. Her tongue swept over mine, and her back arched to get closer to me. All I wanted was to lose myself in her smell and warmth. I cradled her head and neck, deepening the kiss that I never wanted to end.
âThatâs gross.â Siliriaâs voice came uncharacteristically low, like she was actually disgusted.
Malisana and I pulled away from each other, trying to look like nothing happened.
âYou wonât think itâs gross when you get older.â I had to at least try.
Harigan followed his sister out of their room, took her hand, and as he walked past us, I could see him smiling just before he said, âIâm older, and I still think itâs gross.â
âYouâre gonna like being gross when you find a girl you like,â I shot back just as the two of them left the trailer with the puppy bouncing behind them. It was about time we headed for breakfast anyway.
Malisana got up and smoothed out her dress in a failed attempt to hide the evidence of the kiss. The dead giveaway was on her face, or more specifically in the color of it. If I could keep her blushing all day, every day, I would.
I kissed Malisanaâs nose, put my arm on her waist and pulled her toward the door. âFor what itâs worth, your kids didnât look upset, only grossed out. That's normal."
âThey really like you,â Malisana said and pulled away as soon as we got outside.
Right, no PDA except for Seth and Nasilain. The two of them were sitting in their usual spots, and Seth was feeding Nasilain a waffle.
