Dealing with people in their homes or businesses
I mentioned earlier that a good phone manner is important, and a good manner with people in their homes is just as important, if not more so. You've probably had the experience of doing business in your home with someone who apparently couldn't care less about you. Perhaps they were surly, sloppy, unfriendly, or just indifferent. You may have even wondered, "Why am I giving my money to this person?" You don't want your clients to have the same thoughts. Remember, you want repeat business and referrals, so here are a few tips for dealing with clients as you meet them and enter their home or place of business.
As the person you're meeting opens the door, smile, look them in the eye and say, "Hi, I'm Fred Smith, the computer tech." Don't hold your hand out for a handshake, but if they hold out their hand, shake it firmly, but briefly, while you look them in the eye.
Usually people will say, "Come on in." When they do, say, "Thank you" because a person's home is his or her castle and they're inviting you into it.
If you live in a climate with snow, knock the snow off your shoes or take your boots off before entering the home.
Don't be assertive about walking through a client's home, even if you've been there before and know where the computer is. Let them lead the way. People don't want to feel that you're invading their property.
You'll find many people make small talk about the weather or current events to break the ice when they meet you, and that's fine. Converse briefly with them, but don't waste a lot of time before getting down to business. Remember people are paying you a lot of money, so don't waste a lot of their time in chit-chat. You can even begin looking over their computer system as you're pleasantly chatting with the client.
Call people by their names as you're talking to them. People like to hear the sound of their names. Don't sound like a used car salesman though, as in "Mike, I think you have some spyware on this computer. I should be able to take care of that problem, Mike."
You might wonder if some people resent being called by their first names. Maybe. I had potential clients call and say, "This is Mrs. Jones," as if that's how they expect to be addressed. I even had cases where someone didn't even tell me their first name when I got to their homes. On a few occasions, I had to politely ask, "What's your first name?" Then I addressed them by that name. I never had any indication that someone didn't like me addressing them in this manner. I had medical doctors and PhDs as clients. I also had a lot of clients in their 80s. No one seemed to mind my calling them by their first name. The only exception I can think of is if you're very young.
