My mom, her grandfather Clarence, my great-aunt Clare, my aunt Amey, my grandfather Clem, and my aunt Marion
Then, when Mom was eleven, everything changed again. Grandpa Clem, stumping for reelection, died at the age of forty-five when his small plane crashed on a Northern California mountainside, victim to the same storm that delayed the ’62 World Series in San Francisco. Twenty years after the death of his beloved Polly, Clem followed his sister into the wide unknown. Family friend Bill Duddleson showed up at the door of the Millers’ Rock Creek Park house to make breakfast and share the heartbreak. Memorial speeches were given at a special convening of Congress, newspapers printed obituaries, there was a burial in Point Reyes, and after the smoke cleared, a deafening silence. Too late to take Clem off the ballot, Mom’s dad became the second congressman elected posthumously. My grandma remarried. The sisters grew up and scattered. And a decade after their dad died, they built a bridge together.
