WRITE A LETTER

Hand-Deliver It

Expressing gratitude is a skill that can be developed and honed with habitual practice. When you want to share your feelings of appreciation to someone for something he or she has done for you, write that person a letter. Words are meaningful but words on a page are so much more lasting. The receiver can take the letter out again and again to read it and feel lifted by your heartfelt words. Maybe you’re someone who just isn’t comfortable gushing to others about how much you appreciate what they’ve done for you. When you take the time to sit down and write a letter, you can focus on language and tone and style for how you want to convey your gratitude.

Use the letter method to thank a friend for bringing you chicken soup when you were sick or for sharing bounty from her backyard or letting you use an empty shed on his property for storage. A handwritten letter is much more personal than a typewritten one for the purposes of offering a thank-you. Designate a special pen for these purposes.

• Set out paper and take your pen in hand.

• Close your eyes and breathe deeply for three cycles.

• Gather your thoughts around your friend’s selfless act.

• Feel gratitude rising and write from that energy.
