When he was 19, Nzeyimana came up with a solution to both the deforestation and landfill problems. He decided to turn organic waste, such as food scraps, into energy. To do this he created a machine that compresses the waste into briquettes (small blocks) and pellets for cooking. “This enabled our communities not only to have clean fuel alternatives to wood charcoal,” Nzeyimana says, “but also to increase sanitation in communities.”

Success!

Green Pickup

While working at a recording studio in Vancouver, British Columbia, Lisa von Sturmer was amazed by how much organic waste her workplace created. She started a service to pick up this waste, as well as recyclables.

Soon von Sturmer’s company, Growing City, had seven trucks making pickups. Thanks to her service, companies can reduce their waste by more than half. “Don’t hold on to mistakes,” she advises other entrepreneurs. “Learn from them, never repeat them.”
