It’s Not Who You Know; It’s Who Knows You
As you are getting the word out about yourself and your brand and meeting new friends, one thought needs to be “top of mind.” People must not only know you by name; they should also instantly connect you and your name with what you do. It may surprise you to know that people will associate you with what you do. Women are amazing with this. When I am dating a new love interest, her friends don’t always talk about me by my name; they ask her how things are going with “that cute chef guy.” Now, “cute” is surely in the eye of the beholder, but the point is, they know I’m a chef.
Same goes for you. People may not always remember your full name, but they’ll remember what you do or what business you are in. Are you Alexis the vegetarian caterer, or Mike the exotic-game chef? What about Bubba the barbecue pit boss? This is a key to networking. I’m sure you have heard about the “six degrees of separation” phenomenon. Every person you wish to meet, or organization you want to contact, is available to you through no more than six degrees of separation. Somewhere in your circle of friends, customers, and family (a larger circle than you probably suppose, by the way) is a person who knows someone who has a contact who can help propel your efforts.
As you are networking in the real world make sure that you create a positive image and impression of yourself, your brand, and how you can help someone else achieve what they want. Don’t be one of those people who look at others only for how they can benefit number one. Look at finding out ways that you can serve others and fulfill their needs.
