Create a Selective Equivalence
Here is the tricky part. You have to be artful in the creation of an equivalence. In the above example, you are dodging it. But there are times when you need to use it. Be discriminate in your use of it. Not all situations are equal, but with crafty selection you can bring about parity.
Example 1: A murder is committed. The motivations are religious. A killed B because B was of a different religion. The religion of the perpetrator is therefore a factor that will be reported on.
Example 2: Now C, who is of the same religion as B, kills A. However, C kills A because A defaulted on a loan. The religion of the perpetrator is not a factor or motive and therefore logically should not be reported on or highlighted.
Now, this is precisely the kind of logic we cannot encourage. Examples 1 and 2 are exactly the same and if you can attack my religion based on the first case, the second needs the same approach and also becomes about religion. Otherwise, it is clearly a case of bleeding-heart selective liberalism and pseudo liberalism. A true liberal will acknowledge the equivalence. This is a masterly move because you have successfully addled logic with a persuasive emotional pitch. You ask the compelling question: either the religion of the perpetrator counts in all cases or it doesnât count in any. How can this position be argued with? It makes for such solid good sense. How can holding this position be an example of bigotry and not liberalism in its truest sense, instead of the elitist, Western concepts that we seem to love so much? It is also always a good idea to introduce this element of Western imposition into the mix.
