Washing clothes for an entire family once involved filling a washtub with soapy water and washing one piece of clothing at a time. Many people used a washboard to scrub their clothes. Then in 1908, Alva Fisher introduced the first electric-powered washing machine. It could wash a load of laundry at once. In the 1930s, an inventor named John W. Chamberlain improved upon existing electric washing machines by introducing one that could not only wash but also rinse and wring water from clothes. Other advances in clothing care came later. The first electric clothes dryer was introduced in 1915. Electric irons were introduced in 1903, and by 1927, they came with a temperature control that could be adjusted to the userâs preference.
