CHAPTER THIRTEEN—HOLLY

The light coming through the cellar window deepened and started to go dark. Night must be falling. Holly took advantage of the last rays to check on Elise, Garret, Johnny, and Loch, but the situation looked as bad as ever, if not worse.

Loch’s breathing grew progressively more labored. He panted, and a constant tinge of red saliva stained his teeth and lips. His pallid, sweaty face took on a ghastly, haunted look. Every time she checked on him, Holly saw death lurking in his hollow eyes.

Johnny knew it, too, though he made sure never to look directly at Loch. The two men leaned against each other in the corner. They never moved, but Holly got a sense that Johnny was standing guard over Loch.

Not even realizing that they had finally made up after all these years, that they were friends again, could comfort Holly from the certainty that Loch was dying before her eyes. She would give anything to hold him and kiss him one last time, to feel him hale and hearty one more time before she lost him forever.

Garret was even worse off. He slipped into a coma after the beating, and he never emerged from it. His mountainous form filled the cellar with an empty space where his big, comfortable presence should have been. He didn’t open his eyes at all, no matter what Holly did. His arm hung limp and heavy in her grasp when she picked up his hand.

Holly couldn’t even recognize Elise anymore. Her face became a mass of purple mush. Her lips ballooned to a grotesque size, and her eyes looked like slits in a puffy ball of black bruises. The skin split where it swelled too much, and both Elise’s legs twisted the wrong way where those fuckers had broken her legs.

After Camila left, Trevor retreated into a private world of fury and shame. Holly couldn’t bring herself to approach him. She didn’t regret hooking up with him—not in the slightest. Finding out he wasn’t really a firstborn didn’t change the way she felt about him, but maybe he didn’t see it that way.

Maybe he only got interested in her in the first place because he thought he had a destiny with the maiden. On the other hand, maybe he thought he shouldn’t impose on her, now that he no longer entertained any pretensions of becoming king.

Either way, she had enough on her mind with the other four going the way they were. Besides Trevor, the only one she really expected to survive was Johnny, and he couldn’t walk or even sit up straight. He hadn’t moved since the enemy threw them into this cellar. Holly knew he was hiding the seriousness of his injuries for the sake of the other three—and her.

She stood up from her place sitting at Garret’s side, but when she turned around to go back to Johnny and Loch, she stopped in her tracks. Nothing had changed. One look around the cellar showed her that. Loch and Johnny sat in the same place.
