Chapter Six

SELENA

“I still can’t believe a hot fireman is doting on you,” says Bethany. She and I are talking on the phone as I walk to Nash’s place. Bethany has been my best friend since high school—she’s the kind of friend who is super supportive but also tells it like it is.

“Nash isn’t just some random fireman, Bets,” I say. “Remember? I told you about how he was working at the diner the whole time I was going there.”

“Yeah, and then he saved your ass from the fire and carried you out of there like some kind of superhero. And now you’re spending all this time with him! The guy clearly wants you, girl. Has he made a move yet?”

The sun suddenly glares brightly and I dig my sunglasses out of my bag and slip them on. “No. He hasn’t. He’s being very gentlemanly.”

Bethany sighs. “Well, I’m glad you found such a sweet guy. But I hope something actually happens between you two. At least one of us really needs to get laid soon, and God knows it’s not going to be me.”

“Oh, stop, Bets. There’s a perfect guy out there for you, too. You never know when he’ll come into your life.”

“We’ll see. Hey, hold up. Are you saying that Nash is your perfect guy?”

I pause at an intersection, waiting for some cars to pass. “I mean…well…”

“That’s a yes,” Bethany says, laughing. “Somebody’s in love!”

“I’m not in love.”

“Yes, you are. You’re in love with Nash, and you want to get married, and have his babies—”

“Bethany! Jesus!” I press the phone harder against my ear as I rush across the street, my cheeks hot. “Yes, I have a pretty big crush on the guy. But I’m not—I don’t—”

“Okay, okay. I’m sorry.” Bethany catches her breath from laughing so hard. “In all seriousness, though, do you think there’s a future between you two?”

The question makes my heart flip. I’ve been wondering the same thing ever since I started going over to Nash’s place to work. It’s been ten days—ten wonderful days. I’ve felt so spoiled by Nash, and so grateful that he’s opened his home to me. But the arrangement we currently have isn’t going to last forever. In fact, there’s not going to be any need for it in another few days.

And I have no idea what’s going to happen when that time is up.

“I don’t know,” I say. “I hope so. But I really can’t say. My book is due in just a couple days, though, so I guess I’ll find out soon. Because it’s not like I’ll have a reason to keep going over to his place after that.”

“I mean, you could just keep showing up,” jokes Bethany.

I roll my eyes, even though she can’t see me. “What, and pretend I suddenly have another book to work on?”

“Exactly.” Bethany laughs again. “Hey, I hate to go, but I’m getting a call right now from the mechanic. I’ll talk to you later?”

“Of course. I hope the mechanic has good news.
