Victoria left her friend on the settee and went straight to Barbara to inform her of her very real danger.

But Hermine was to be proved right: Barbara didn’t want to know about a possible threat to her life, or rather, she almost went so far as to accuse Victoria herself of murder.

“You’re trying to warn me?” she hissed at Victoria like a fury. “Really? Or is it possibly more of a threat?”

“Excuse me?” Victoria backed away in amazement.

“Don’t act so hypocritical. Do you think I don’t see through your oh-so-friendly façade? The understanding, helpful psychologist—who is in truth fed up with her patients. And probably hates all other people, too! What a hypocrite!”

“Well, that’s not really true,” Victoria defended herself. “I just took time off from work because…”

“I don’t give a damn!” Barbara cut her off rudely.

I growled softly—which only fueled her anger.

“You and your damn zoo!” she hurled at my poor human. “You’re just what we need, in addition to Hermine’s hysterical fowl. That ghastly wench has turned our home into a madhouse. And since you have taken up residence here, two of my siblings have died.”

She tapped Victoria’s collarbone with an aggressive stab of her index finger. “You call that a coincidence? Who are you trying to fool? If you seriously believe that you can come and intimidate me with your oh-so-well-meant warning…”

I smelled Victoria starting to sweat and was afraid that the two women were about to go for each other’s throats.

But of course, my two-legged is not inclined to violence. She kept a cool head—well, maybe not entirely. Her cheeks literally blazed with anger.

But her self-control was enough to lead her to clear the battlefield instead of continuing to argue with Barbara and escalate the dispute even further. Victoria turned around abruptly and left the room without another word—with Pearl and me close on her heels.
