Chapter 5

With my encouragement and some outright bribery, Porsha manages to keep our date PG. She even wins, squeaking in two shots under my score. I lift her arm in the victory vee like she’s won by KO.

I put on an announcer’s voice. “And our winner, lightweight Porsha!”

She laughs and lets me spin her in a circle. “You let me win!”

“No, I didn’t,” I protest, but my honesty has run its course. This one is okay though, because we both know the truth. I just wanted to put a smile on her face.

“Wow, you’re so sweet. I just can’t believe no one has snapped you up yet. No matter, you’re ours now! And I want my treat.”

“But of course. As long as you can hold out until we get back…”

“Oh, you tease!” Her smack is playful, and we’re both laughing as we leave the establishment.

Surprisingly, she needs no further reminder to behave on the quick drive back to Lacie’s place. The both of us agree we’re not hungry yet, so we’re skipping dinner in favor of boning. So we’re joking about different ways we plan to tease each other as we get out of the car.

The walk to Lacie’s front door is easier now and feels warm and exciting. I notice the rose bushes look a little empty but figure her landscaper knows what he’s doing. Maybe it’s to help stimulate growth or something. We step inside the foyer, and Porsha gasps and points her finger.

“Can you believe this? It’s fabulous, like out of a movie!”

I follow her gaze and pointing, trying to absorb the changes, which I can say I definitely would not have noticed on my own. On every surface, lining down the hallway as if to guide are tall branches of burning candles. The flames leap and dance, visible even with the warm regular lamps that are also lit.

The air is thick with a heady perfume, a smell I know and recognize even if I don’t recall what it is right now. And on the floor is a white runner -- I honestly can’t remember if that has always been there -- with red rose petals scattered on top. The red-on-white makes another trail, leading us like breadcrumbs in a fairy tale forest.

I close my mouth with an effort. “Holy shit, it really is! It’s out of this world.”

Porsha meets my gaze, her eyes wide. “We’re not in a horror film, are we?”

“No, this is real life, not some jump-scare flick,” I say. “Besides, have you heard of a serial killer who decorates with candles and rose petals like it’s Valentine’s Day?”

“Oh, right.” She titters nervously. “Then, um… should we go see?”

“Yeah, we have to see what’s in store. Aren’t you curious?” I take her hand and start walking down the rose-petal trail. “I have a feeling you’re going to get more than a simple reward.”

Still holding my hand, she follows a few paces behind me. “Yeah, that’s kind of what I’m scared of. Excited too! But also anxious.
