Chapter Six

KIRA

After clearing the air with Vincent and getting a good night’s sleep, today has been better. Our conference sessions have been an effective distraction, too. It’s the last day of the conference, and I’ve taken pages upon pages of notes. There are so many interesting new things I’m already planning on implementing at our farm. My brain is buzzing with ideas.

As we head out of the presentation room, Vincent nudges his shoulder against mine. “Where do you want to grab lunch?”

“Up to you,” I say, my voice light. I’m down for whatever he chooses. I’m just relieved that the tension between us is more or less gone. The normal easy happiness I feel whenever Vincent is near has returned.

I guess I never realized how much his presence influences my moods, how much his go-with-the-flow attitude rubs off on me and keeps my own anxiety at a more manageable level. I mean, I’m definitely way more uptight than him, but it helps.

Eventually, us getting drunkenly married in Vegas will be another story we tell people, interrupting each other at the good parts, laughing over the other as we hone our comedic timing through the years. We already have the story about the time Vincent and I went camping for the first and last time after a snake snuck into his sleeping bag. And the one about how I decided after graduation I was going to have a hot girl summer and had him rub tanning lotion all over me. I wound up looking like I dipped my arms in mud, my entire body streaked and stained for two weeks.

Out of the depths of my mind surfaces a memory that I haven’t thought of in ages: Vincent’s broad hands running down my thick thighs, massaging in the tanning lotion. I glance over, find his blue eyes looking at me, and a blush creeps up my neck.

“What are you in the mood for?” he asks.

My cheeks flare with heat.

Silently, I chide myself. I can’t be thinking about Vincent like this.

Yet I am. The tanning lotion memory gives way to the memory of the fuzzy kiss we shared after our wedding. It plays through my mind in a dreamy loop. His lips, soft on mine at first, asked permission before his fingers slid from my jaw through my hair to cup the back of my head. Then his tongue slid against mine, teasing and tempting and—

“Kira?”

From the way Vincent says my name, I can tell it’s not the first time he’s said it. It might not even be the second.

“Yeah?” I manage to say. I can’t help when my gaze flicks to his full lips before I force it upward again.

He’s pointing at a restaurant we’re walking past. It’s already busy with other conference-goers, but there doesn’t seem to be anyone waiting for a table. I nod, distracted.

He raises an eyebrow as he holds the door for me. “You okay?”

Instead of answering in a lie, I duck under his arm into the air-conditioned building.
