Stepping out on the front steps of the church, the late afternoon sun felt good on Eric’s face as Malcolm squinted and wrinkled his nose in order to push his glasses up. Lurker demons surrounded the stairwell, moaning and mulling about, but otherwise passive. As the two men stepped among them, Eric spoke in a foreign tongue with a reserved hush in his tone. Malcolm had trouble hearing, but the demons that looked like incomplete humans cringed and shied away towards the shadows of the building.

“Have you ever seen so many assembled in one place like this?” Malcolm questioned.

“I have upon occasion,” Eric told.

“You aren’t hunting them?”

“They’re more afraid of us than we are of them,” the hunter promised. “They don’t even know why they’ve assembled in this place. Some believe lurkers to be the bodies of those who died with the regret of having turned their back on Him. All they can do is return to holy ground in search of mercy.”

“But for the safety of others,” Malcolm hinted, “shouldn’t something be done?”

“How safe would they feel if they saw the new preacher staking and decapitating on the front lawn?”

“Yes, I see your point.”

“Why don’t we walk? I’ve always enjoyed the rain but this last series of storms was simply too much. It’s nice to see the sun shine.”

“Some believe the weather plays an important part in the congregation of demons and spirits,” said Malcolm.

“What do you believe?”

“My understanding of demonology is purely that of a novice,” he chuckled with a lopsided grin. “I’m more interested in what you believe.”

“Good afternoon,” Eric said politely to two mothers who passed by on the sidewalk.

“Good afternoon,” the women responded in unison as Malcolm eyed them awkwardly.

“What was your latest book titled?”

Malcolm grinned and proudly said, “One God: The Myth of Modern Faith. It was a best seller online and in North Dakota, you know?”

“That’s good,” Eric said, less than impressed. “Why did you write it?”

“I wanted people to know they had the right to demand answers from those they followed.”

“Did you think they had forgotten?”

“I think they had been led to believe questions were a sign of weak faith,” Malcolm reasoned.

Following the taller, younger man into a lackluster coffee house and computer store, Malcolm looked around at the idle workers as Eric took a seat at a public computer terminal. Accessing the Internet, he entered an address that brought up the log-in page to a free email server. Reviewing his account, he composed a fast message and noisily tapped away at the keys with heavy, stiff fingers.

“Does this have anything to do with your visit from former colleagues?”

“No,” Eric told. “But since they know where I am, there’s no point in being bashful.”

Reading the screen, Malcolm said with a hint of discomfort, “Blood brother thirty-four?”

“A promise made to a friend,” Eric noted, “but it’s three four, not thirty-four. I was born on March fourth.”

“Ah, I turned fifty on the fifteenth of January.”

“Congratulations.”

“Thrill killer sixty-eight,” Malcolm recited. “You’re comfortable with the macabre, aren’t you?”

Eric smirked as he continued to type.
