I can’t deal with my emotions on this. I don’t want him to see my anger…

“We’re not going to get a tree tonight, little one.”

He pulls away from me in a panic and tries to get down from the tailgate, but I grab his legs and don’t let him get up. After seeing that memory, I don’t think I’ll ever want to get a real tree or glass ornaments ever again. I want to eliminate all of the triggers of his childhood…

“Daddy, no,” he whispers as he tries to hold back sobs. “Jackie deserves a tree. We can’t take that away from him now that we’re here. It’s not fair and not right. He needs to get his real tree.”

I look down to see the first tears start to fall. Even knowing it will hurt him, he won’t give up on making my little brother happy. I don’t deserve this wonderful man in front of me. Fate really blessed me with him.

“Okay, baby boy. You win,” I tug off his hat to run my fingers through his hair as I pull him close again. “We’ll get a big tree for Jackie and it will go in the entryway. We’ll make Seb and Bastian keep it watered and tidy as their punishments, but we’re getting a fake tree for the living room where the presents will go.”

I can do a compromise here. A new tree for a new start and Jack will still get to pick out a real tree. It’s the best of both worlds. We can throw out the generic breakable ornaments with the tree after the holiday and then keep the ones that are special and buy all new ones. This should work better for all of us in the long run.

“Can we get a white tree?” Ethan mumbles into my chest.

“Anything you want, Blue. Anything for you.”
