Healing, Therapeutic Touch and placebo power

The laying on of hands, faith healing, spiritual healing and Therapeutic Touch, all have a common thread and all have shown, under clinically controlled conditions, that they can reduce pain and anxiety to a significant degree.

When such healing is applied, the person providing the treatment holds their hands in an area which they feel appropriate to the patient’s needs, but their hands do not actually touch the patient – they are held some inches away from the surface. The healer then focuses attention on thoughts which are healing, soothing, supportive and compassionate, holding those thoughts for a matter of minutes before usually moving the hands to another position.

Just what happens is unclear, but in one fascinating Canadian study patients received exactly this method of treatment from nurses for the relief of chronic headache. A definite reduction of intensity of pain was recorded by these patients, and they were also shown to use far less pain-killing medication in the hours after treatment. This could well be put down to the placebo effect were it not for the fact that in this study an equal number of headache patients (a control group) received apparently the same treatment but in this case the nurses were doing mental arithmetic instead of thinking healing thoughts whilst ‘laying on hands’. There was no reduction in pain or use of pain-killers amongst this group. Clearly, what the healer thinks makes the difference.

At McGill University in Canada research was conducted using dishes of enzymes or bacteria which had been damaged by exposure to radiation. When healing was applied, the damaged enzymes or bacteria were found to recover full vigorous activity, whilst those untreated continued to show poor activity. So, something which is not easy to explain can happen when healing thoughts are directed.

While it might be assumed that a prerequisite is that the patient receiving healing should believe that something positive is going to happen (should have faith, in other words), it has been found that this is not the case. Benefits have been recorded in sceptics as well as believers, and it seems that, whilst a belief in the treatment is always of help, what matters most in healing is what the healer is thinking at the time treatment is given.
