Clarice’s alert blue eyes followed the waiter through the door to the kitchen. When he fully disappeared, she addressed the family. “Last night, someone made an attempt on my life.”

“What?” Preston’s relaxed posture stiffened. “Run that by me again.”

“I didn’t see who but one of you is the guilty party,” Clarice said. “If not for my angel, Rebecca you would be planning my funeral instead of celebrating 100 years.”

Chattered filled the table and I couldn’t make out individual comments.

“Hush up. I don’t want you all to feign worry or pretend to be shocked by the thought. More than one of you certainly considered it over the years.” She snagged a knife and sliced a pad of butter for her toast. “No surprise from this bunch but the culprit is a failure.”

“Mother, did Doc Gentry check you over?”

“Your concern is almost touching, Preston.” Clarice clutched her son’s hand.

“Her health is miraculous under the circumstances but I suggested we go to the hospital to be sure,” the doctor said.

“No hospital and no police. We are settling this matter here and now.” Clarice spread the butter and spooned jam on her plate. “Before we reach Chicago, I will know the name of the attempted murderer and deal with them myself.”

Ursula shoved her breakfast with the back of her fork. “How do you expect to do that, Clarice? I doubt the killer will simply come clean.”

“Rebecca is a detective and the only one above suspicion. She will conduct an investigation and I demand everyone corporates fully.”

“My alibi is rock solid, Grandmother.” Lewis Clark grinned. “I got my first peaceful sleep since before I started my business.”

“Not an alibi if no one can corroborate,” Boone said.

“Well take my word for it, okay? I didn’t try to kill my grandmother in her sleep.” Lewis Clark snapped to Oakley. “Pass the syrup, please.”

“Preston, do you think our daughter should be here for this discussion?” Tiffany shifted her gaze to the head of the table. “Or is the ten-year-old not above suspicion?”

“Oakley is in the clear.” Clarice tore off a piece of her bread and tossed it to her standard poodle. “Gigi would alert us if she left her cabin.”

“How is this whole thing supposed to go?” Preston’s eyes squinted with skepticism. “Do we air our dirty laundry at the breakfast table or wait to bad mouth each other in private?”

“Y’all know I speak my mind.” Danielle raised her hand. “I have nothing to hide.”

“Just me or did that make her more suspicious?” Ursula asked.

“You should start with her.” Tiffany cupped a hand, blocking her words. “I never trust an Okie.”

“Um, this is getting a bit out of hand.” I scooted my chair. “Grandmother Clarice, may I take over the meeting?”

“Be my guest.”

I sucked in a deep breath. “If everyone retires to the lounge, I will call you in one by one.”

“You gonna beat a confession out of the killer, Half Pint?” Lewis Clark asked.

“If necessary. Granny gave me carte blanche.” I attempted my most intimidating glare. “Though I imagine threatening your trust funds might be a better tactic.
