Chapter 6 – The United States and Hawaiʻi

Any history of Hawaiʻi would be woefully incomplete without the inclusion of a specific chapter dedicated to the long history and relationship between the United States of America and Hawaiʻi. The effect of American culture on Hawaiʻi was so marked that from the 1800s onward, most cities and major towns of Hawaiʻi looked more American.

The streets were lined with churches, schools, commercial buildings, and residences that were fashioned after Western architecture and layouts. The language, music, and laws of Hawaiʻi were Americanized, sporting only hints and influences of native culture. Indisputably, Hawaiʻi was the subject of marketing, with ads touting a tropical and exotic paradise that also happened to have bottled beer, billiard tables, and tracks for horse cars.

Much of these influences can be attributed to the arrival of Christian missionaries, with most sources agreeing that this began with the arrival of seventeen Protestant missionaries in 1820. Like most Christian missionary writings of first contact with native peoples all over the world, the Hawaiian people were regarded and described by the Protestant missionaries as “dirty, lazy, spiritually ignorant and wild” people. Such a description was plainly false, as Native Hawaiians were decidedly industrious, especially from an exploratory and agricultural perspective. They had deep spiritual roots and had extensive cultural and social norms, which were all built around an extended unit of the family.
