"Darling, did we need to meet in such a low-class establishment?" My mother's familiar tone of scorn fills the room, and the barman glances in our direction, frowning.

Instantly I know meeting her was a mistake.

I stare across the table, cringing at her obvious derision. She clutches an over-sized glass of white wine in a well-manicured hand. Not a strand of hair in her silver-blond tinted bob is out of place.

"Really, Darling, I know there may be some confusion between us, but you could surely do better than this. We must maintain our standards."

Life without the home-comforts of my step-father's mansion clearly hasn't taught her any humility.

"You wanted to meet?"

"Yes, of course." She sips from the wine glass, making a face at its contents before putting down the glass. Reaching forward, she rests a hand on my forearm.

"I very proud to hear you've had success. I just knew you needed some motivation in life. Clearly, I should have pushed you out of the nest sooner. Aren't you happy? I've encouraged you to fly!" The smile she gives me is genuine, lighting up her eyes.

My mother has never been proud of me for anything. I'm thoroughly confused. "Mom, I thought we were meeting so you could give me everything back. What are you talking about?"

"Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about, you bagged a millionaire! My ugly duckling is finally a swan. We're rich Darling!"

Now it all makes sense. Mom doesn't want to return the money, she wants Brad's too.

"You're not here to give me anything back, are you?"

Her hand flexes against my arm, the perfect nails digging into my skin. "I don't like your tone young lady! Remember who you're talking to.

"I worked my whole life to elevate us above this kind of place." She gestures at the bar surrounding us. "I've done my part, now it's time for you to take care of me."

She's beyond belief. "What exactly do you expect me to do?"

"It's obvious Darling. Haven't you been paying attention? Hook him and marry him. Once you've got that ring on your finger, everything that's his is ours!" Her expression glows at the idea.

My whole life has been spent waiting for Mom to be proud of me. For her to view me as something other than an inconvenience. Knowing I've only earned her approval as a tool for manipulating the man I love breaks something in me. I stand up, ripping my arm out of her grip.

"You're disgusting. Just an awful, vile, parasite of a human. I'm nothing like you! I would never do to Brad what you did to Dad and the men you cheated since he died. What's wrong with you? How did you end up this broken?"

Mom jumps to her feet on the other side of the booth. Her handbag's chain strap swings wildly beside her, banging against the table. Reaching forward, she waves a finger at my face. "You will do what you're told you ungrateful brat. I want that money. I deserve
