Chapter 4

Beth wiped away a bit of water she had missed, after splashing her face in the jet’s sink. Ciaran was inspecting the pictures of some property somewhere on a laptop as she did, but he turned slightly when she came out and offered her a smile, closing the screen. “You know you have a five-star hotel’s bathroom on your airplane, right?” she inquired jokingly as she moved to sit down across from him.

He laughed and nodded. “Yes. I had this custom designed a few years ago, and after years of traveling everywhere on airplanes, my one absolute request was ensuring a proper washroom, complete with a shower. Even in first class, you cannot imagine how completely repulsive airline bathrooms are.” Ciaran shuddered for effect, and she smiled at him, easing herself into the plush leather seat.

The plane hadn’t taken off yet, and Beth was still reeling from her argument with Kylie. She tipped her head back against the seat and closed her eyes. After a few minutes, the flight attendant came by to tell Ciaran they’d be taking off in a minute and to buckle their seatbelts. They both did so, and the jet rolled out onto the runway to take off. Beth turned her head to watch as the airport passed by, the other planes waiting to take off.

“Are you still thinking about Miss Sutton, Bethany?” he asked quietly as the wheels started to lift from the ground. She nodded vaguely. “You needn’t feel guilty about anything you said to her, you know. From the things I have seen, she… deserved every word. And you deserved a better friendship than hers.”

“No, that isn’t it. I just…” Beth trailed off and sighed, letting her thought end midsentence. Truthfully, to herself, she was thinking about the fact that she didn’t have any friends in San Francisco. Not really. And she had just very firmly severed ties with Kylie, and beyond the bakery… what was here for her? It might be months before Ciaran came back again, before his work let him, and she imagined she would talk to him in the course of business, but she knew it wouldn’t be the same. Would he still want to continue any sort of relationship with her if she turned him down now? Beth frowned and turned her brown eyes back to him.

“Ciaran? Why don’t you ever let me see you naked?”

He blinked at her. He had apparently figured she really didn’t want to talk about Kylie anymore and had turned back to his laptop. “Excuse me?”

“Whenever you have any intention of actually having… I don’t know, quote-unquote normal sex with me, you always blindfold me. And last night, when I… stopped you, before you untied me, you got dressed again,” she explained carefully.

“Ah,” Ciaran murmured and closed his laptop again. He was silent for a moment, studying her quietly. Finally, he sighed. “All things considered, I suppose I do owe you that much for what I am offering you, when it is hardly as though you wouldn’t find out if you said yes.
