Chapter 7
Amara took a different flight from Hiroshi and though it hadn’t been planned that way, she was glad for it because it gave her an extra day to get her affairs in order. She hitched a subway ride to Brooklyn, hiding under the seat in an unoccupied car to avoid being kicked out.
Sometimes being small has its advantages.
When the coast was clear, she climbed out and sat in the chair she’d been hiding beneath and rested her head against the vibrating glass of the window. She didn’t think about anything in particular, for once. She just existed, becoming one with the roaring train as it snaked its way to her destination.
Amara dismounted with everyone else, pushing her way into the crowd to avoid detection. She emerged out into the cold and went straight to her stash of belongings, under the edge of a platform in a section that was hard to see from elsewhere in the station. A perpetually-broke lightbulb helped disguise her, allowing her to blend in with the shadows; if her skin was a redder tone than the gray of the dark, it didn’t matter much. She was fast.
Amara sung her bag over her shoulder and boarded a different train, and then another one after that, performing the same tricks each time until she had visited all of her stashes. Now she wore two jackets, a beanie, a threadbare pair of mittens, and a fanny pack with nothing inside -snatched from inside the entrance of a clothing store. She carried four bags, two of which were backpacks, one of which was an overnight bag, and the last was a computer case that contained basically everything except a computer. This was the first time she’d ever put all her belongings in the same place. She was amazed at both how much and how little she had to her name in this world.
Coincidentally, this was also the first time she wished she had a shopping cart to push around. She resisted the urge to pop by a grocery store and snatch one. She was bringing enough attention to herself as it was.
Amara lugged her stuff to an underpass below a bridge and dropped it all on the ground. She scanned the shadows and made out two figures in the dark, standing close together and facing in her direction. She recognized them and called out to them. “Wasp! Bubbles!”
Wasp scurried over at her call, followed slower by his unofficial guardian, Bubbles. Wasp dropped to his knees in front of Amara’s supplies and snatched at the computer bag, ripping it open.
“Hey,” Bubbles reprimanded, putting his hand on Wasp’s shoulder. Wasp paused and glanced up at him, annoyed.
Amara laughed a little, relaxing in the presence of people she knew, even if she wouldn’t have called them friends. “It’s okay. This is the one time I’m okay with it. He can have whatever catches his eye.”
Wasp brightened, his big eyes widening. He stuck out his tongue at Bubbles and uttered a rare word. “See?”
Bubbles held up his hands.
