She peeked at him, her eyes wide, her lips partly open. Och, she was fetching. Even as he sat with wretched bee stings all over his body, he only wanted to be here, with her in the apothecary.

“Aye,” she whispered.

He grinned at her shy response. A response which went straight to his cods. “There are more.”

“More?” her voice squeaked as her gaze roamed over him.

“Aye.” He stood and removed his liene.

Her brow quirked upward as she inspected him. “Ahh. More.” She blushed a rosy hue beneath the smattering of freckles upon her nose and cheeks.

Why he told her, he didn’t know. Her touch sent flames through his body and if she began administering to the rest of the stings in sensitive places, he may go mad with desire.

She swallowed and her eyes widened. “I need more oil.”

She searched through her stores, fumbled a bit and returned to his side. She glanced up at him, pulled on her bottom lip with her teeth, then nodded for him to sit. Slowly she dabbed the stings with the oil. It soothed nearly as much as her touch, her presence.

His shallow breaths helped still the fire surging through his veins. A barrage of need nearly engulfed him.

Just when he’d tried to remain detached, something triggered within him and prodded his mind into thinking, hoping, she’d mellowed toward him.

And if she’d mellowed, could it be more? Could the lady feel as he did?

Her nose scrunched as she focused on his skin. The concentration of her gaze saved solely for his injuries. “Are you in pain?”

Aye, he wanted to yell. But not from the blasted bees, from the tentative touches she trotted over his chest with her delicate fingers. It took all of his wavering resolve not to pull her into his arms and ravish those plump lips of hers. They’d taste as sweet as her, honeyed berries. He clenched his fist so not to follow his impulse. She’d not welcome his touch, even though she was being kind to him and her sharp tongue remained silent. Her harsh words at the evening meal before Graeme and Lady Faith told how she loathed his position in the clan.

And he’d bet his steed Grim she argued with her laird about the same topic in front of the stables. When he approached, he sensed the tension and saw the retreating form of her sister. But as they traded words, she relaxed, smiled and bantered with him as if naught was wrong.

And while he loathed the bee boles, he agreed to assist her just so he could see her smile and how her eyes lit with pleasure as she secured the healing goods.

“Time for honey.”

He refocused on her. A hopeful gleam filled her eyes. He nodded, not sure if he could trust himself to speak as his parched throat nearly stopped all air.

Some auburn strands of hair slipped across her brow, tangled in those long lashes of hers. Lady Honor blew at them and when they didn’t cooperate, she hastily tucked them behind her ear.
