CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

“So, what was that about, yesterday?” Maz asked, settling into his seat opposite Olivia. She rolled her eyes at him, and he felt the first stirrings of embarrassment flood through him. Ever since he’d made a pass at her at Drew’s house warming, things had been weird between them. It wasn’t even as though he’d really meant to do it. But with the alcohol flowing, and the air of camaraderie that had surrounded them, Maz had found himself swept up in the moment.

It was actually somewhat of a relief that Olivia had turned him down flat, although she could have been nicer about it.

“Nothing, just a routine breaking and entering.” She clicked through on her computer, and Maz got up from his seat and moved around behind her so he could watch over her shoulder. She quickly flicked away from the report she’d been working on, and Maz felt the first stirrings of jealousy in his gut. Why would the DI have picked her over him? He was the better choice. The more obvious choice, and yet he could still remember the look on the guv’s face when he’d told him to stay put.

Maz moved away and perched on the edge of the desk as Olivia turned to face him. What had he seen in her? She wasn’t exactly beautiful, at least not in the conventional sense. And mother definitely wouldn’t approve of her. He pulled himself up short for the unkind leanings in his mind. Jealousy was a terrible thing. Olivia was his mate. He should have been happy to see her getting some more time out of the office.

“Why would that interest us?”

She shrugged. “Haven’t got a clue. Came down from the DCI.”

She was playing dumb; he was sure of it. He made a mental note to ask her to play poker one Saturday night. He’d take her to the cleaners for certain.

“And no one got hurt or died?”

Olivia shook. “They didn’t even take anything.”

Maz let out a low whistle. “That’s odd.”

Olivia shot him a withering look, and Maz returned to his own side of the desk. “Don’t be such an ass,” she said.

“I’m not,” he said. “I’m serious. It’s a weird one. This isn’t our line of work at all.”

She shook her head. “It is now.”

Maz glanced over at the room opposite their squad room. “Do you think the nerd squad knows something?”

Olivia shrugged, her attention locked onto the screen before her. “You could always check it out.”

Frowning at her, he pushed up from his chair. Had she already been over there?

Crossing out of the room, Maz wandered across the hall and into the next room. It was practically filled to the gills with computers and computer equipment. Along one wall sat what looked to Maz like something straight out of a science fiction movie, complete with multicoloured wires and flashing lights. Just standing in the doorway, with the oppressively warm air blowing out at him, was enough to cause a migraine to form behind his eyes.
