When Ellis Robbins arrived at his parents’ house on Julia Street that morning, he found not only his nearly blind eighty-two-year-old father, Richard Robbins, a retired steam engine conductor, and his seventy-year-old mother, Ola Sheppard Robbins, but also his sister Martha Schaffercotter and her two young children: two-year-old Barry and ten-year-old Robin Ola. Water from the bay soon began rising rapidly, and Ellis Robbins knew the house would be inundated. He made for his parents’ garage, where he found a stepladder and an axe.

He climbed the stepladder and used the axe to cut a hole in the ceiling. Then, he carried his parents up the ladder and into the attic. He returned for his sister and the children and got them safely into the attic. The water continued to rise, filling the kitchen. The Robbins family watched the flooding through the hole Ellis Robbins had cut in the ceiling. The water rose, floating the family refrigerator and stove. A box floated by, and Ola Robbins reached out, the water level close enough for her grasp, and grabbed it—it contained a nightgown she had just bought.

Fearing that the attic would not keep the family safe, Ellis Robbins left through an opening and went into the water. He swam with his sister Martha to a nearby tree. She clambered up to a limb that would keep them out of the water. He looked back at the house. Martha’s two young kids were still in the attic—not to mention his parents.
