CHAPTER 14

TREAT HEADACHES AND DIZZINESS

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits, who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases.

—PSALM 103:1–3

HEADACHES AND DIZZINESS are among the most common ailments. Fortunately God is in the healing business, and He has provided natural treatments within His world to bring relief from these debilitating problems. Headaches are classified according to symptoms and cause. The vast majority of headaches can be relieved with simple relaxation techniques and by avoiding any unusual stimulation. Avoiding light and noise, relaxing in a quiet environment, and even praying can often relieve the pain of headaches.

TYPES OF HEADACHES

Categories of headaches range from simple stress or tension headaches to more severe problems such as brain tumors or temporal arteritis, which can be serious. The simple headache consists of a buzzing or pulsing discomfort in the head, and it can be related to high blood pressure, fever, stress, weather, or other causes. The following list may help you identify the type of headache(s) you experience.

Ice pick headaches

These are brief, stabbing headaches, which, although potentially frightening to many patients, are benign.

Tension headaches

This very common headache usually begins in the back of the head or neck area, or in the forehead or temple region, and spreads throughout the head. Frequently tension headaches occur on both sides of the head.

Cluster headaches

This type of headache is characterized by a piercing or burning pain, often occurring on one side of the head, usually in exactly the same place from one episode to another. These headaches occur on a regular basis for days or weeks at a time and then may disappear.

Migraine headaches

Migraine headaches are often referred to as “sick” headaches because vomiting, nausea, and vision problems often accompany them. These headaches are due to constrictions and dilations in blood vessels in the brain. Migraines are sometimes very difficult to diagnose as they may present only with blurred vision or partial loss of a vision field on one side.

Ocular migraine headache

This type of headache can cause a loss of peripheral vision. It is often hereditary.

Combination headache

The combination headache presents as a migraine headache followed by a dull, continuing pain afterward.

NATURAL PAIN RELIEF

Herbal treatments have been utilized to treat headaches. The natural, nonaddictive tranquilizer kava kava can help to relieve tension headaches. A migraine headache, however, which is caused by the expansion and constriction of blood vessels, is better treated with feverfew and ginkgo biloba. (Simply follow the instructions on the bottle for the appropriate dosage.)

Another treatment for headaches is to add just a few drops (four to five) of fresh lemon to a cup of black coffee and then sip it slowly. Caffeine is a well-known plant-derived substance that can help alleviate headaches by dilating the blood vessels in the brain. Another herbal treatment is to apply cold compresses that have had two to three drops of peppermint oil added to the cloth. Placing this against the painful area for fifteen minutes can relieve simple tension headaches.
