Chapter Five

Jade

Jade regretted wearing the summer dress the minute they stepped into the hospital. It was so cold.

She followed Hero into Mercy hospital, down several corridors until they reached a room near the end of the hall. Inside was a lone hospital bed with her father in it. He was hooked up to all manner of machines, looking a little better than he had yesterday when he had managed to come to the church for Mina’s funeral. Still, she hoped he was going to be okay as her gaze moved over him.

“I look bad, huh?” Her father scrubbed a hand through his hair, sweeping the shiny metal-colored locks away from his face. “Hey, there,” he said in that deep whiskey voice. “Thanks for coming, Jade.”

She nodded, smiled. Hero grabbed one of the stuffed chairs and dragged it close to the bed before taking a seat. “How are you feeling?” she asked, coming to sit next to him on the bed, putting herself between the two men.

The charming smile slipped from his face as his gaze moved over her. The emotion in his hazel eyes it had her heart squeezing in her chest. “You look just like Vanessa,” he said after a moment.

“Grams told me that a lot.”

Razor nodded. “How are you doing?”

Jade knew what he was really asking. “I’m… I’m fine. I’m just… I’m sorry this happened to you. If I did anything…”

“Hey, no.” Razor covered one of her hands with his. “You didn’t do anything wrong. What happened to me wasn’t your fault. I had a bad feeling something was going on when word got out that Mina died. People started asking about you. I should have done more.”

“How much trouble did you get into for escaping yesterday?” Hero asked him.

Razor’s grin was back. “I got read the riot act.”

Hero laughed at that.

Her father’s gaze turned speculative. “It was worth it. I needed to pay my respects.”

To a woman who never let him see his daughter. That only created more questions in her head.

“What happened?” Razor asked carefully.

She explained getting into town, her discussion with Emery. Then she mentioned she’d driven into Mercy for something to eat. And that’s when they grabbed her, drugging her. The tears threatened again as she described waking up, the confrontation. “That main guy… Baby Face? Oh, God. It was like… he hated me. He hated me so much,” she explained. Tears began to sting the back of her eyes.

“Jade,” Hero said softly. “Tell him what he said to you.”

Taking a deep breath, Jade told him. “Baby Face told me I would be sorry. He said I’d be a used-up whore like my mother.” When she got to the last part, she hesitated, feeling fragile now that she was facing her father. The man she’d never been allowed to see most of her life.

“The bastard suggested that him and Big Dog and Jimmy Jazz should break her in,” Hero said when she couldn’t. “Then one of them asked Baby Face if she wasn’t his half-sister? You know what he meant by that?”

Razor’s gaze moved from Hero to her.
