Botanical description: It is a native plant of Europe, including Britain, from Norway south and east to Spain and Asia to Japan and the Himalayas. It is a deciduous shrub growing up to 6 m by 2.5 m at a medium rate. It flowers in April, and the seeds ripen from September to October. The flowers are dioecious and are pollinated by wind. The plant is not self-fertile. It can fix nitrogen
Medicinal uses: It is used as an astringent, poultice, tonic, and vermifuge and for curing cancer and cardiac disorders. A high-quality medicinal oil is made from the fruit and used in the treatment of cardiac disorders; it is also said to be particularly effective when applied to the skin to heal burns, eczema, and radiation injury and is taken internally for the treatment of stomach and intestinal diseases
