Chapter Sixteen

All this waiting, and Sterling continues to look worse and worse by the day.

Every time I see him, he’s either holding onto a screaming baby or has Bridget squeezing his arm so tight as she walks with him that he looks like a dog whose collar is three sizes too small.

The rare moments when I see him without either Bridget or the baby are becoming few and far between. It’s almost as if she knows that being around her and the baby torture him the most—so she makes sure that he remains as miserable as possible.

On the rare occasion that I do see him by himself, he looks like shit. He has lost so much weight that his pants are hanging at his hips. His eyes are bloodshot and sunken. And his hands have a constant tremble that they don’t stop shaking.

“Hey, how are you holding up?” I ask him on a rare occasion that I catch him alone in a hallway between classes.

“Fine,” he answers, in a voice that definitely doesn’t sound fine.

“Is there anything I can do to—”

“No,” he says abruptly, cutting off my question. “I wish you’d just stop trying to fix me, Aubrey. Nothing you or anyone else can do is going to change anything.”

Then he walks away quickly without so much as another word. Even walking straight down the hall seems like a struggle for him now.

When I see Chase later that day, I try to talk to him again about Sterling’s deteriorating condition. This time he at least listens to me instead of brushing me off completely. It’s been a while since I even stood this close to him. I find myself leaning closer, trying to take in the scent of him. He always smells like the lake now, a smell that carries with it the memory of our brief moment of weakness.

And the moment that forced us apart yet again.

“Yeah, I’ve noticed it too,” he says dismally. “Warren has been trying to help him, but it’s not easy. Bridget doesn’t exactly let us close to him much these days.”

“Isn’t there something that we can do to help him?” I ask. “Or you at least. Even Bridget has to see he needs it.”

Chase lets out a heavy sigh. “You know Bridget. But honestly … honestly, it’s not all her. He has to be ready to accept help, and right now all I’m getting is a big f-off.”

“I’m just worried that by the time he’s ready to accept help, it might be too late.”

“Despite what it looks like, he’s got a good head on his shoulders,” Chase says. “He won’t do anything stupid.”

Chase’s level of confidence is higher than mine. I don’t put anything past anyone anymore.

“Just keep an extra eye on him okay?” I ask, even as he tries to shoulder past me.

“Sure,” Chase nods.

He doesn’t sound very committal, but at least this conversation went better than the last. At least this time it had been an actual conversation.

I think it’s over until, a couple steps down the hall, I hear him call after me—a little hesitantly at first.
