Chapter Sixteen

Dick cast a longing look out the window before moving to the doorway. He pressed his back against the wall and listened for the intruders.

“What the fuck!” a gruff voice called. “What the hell is that?”

Dick imagined the owner of the voice scrabbling around for his shrieking device. Ringo had done well. Not only did it alert anyone when it was disturbed, but now the motors within it would have kicked into action, and the ball would be speeding around the lounge like a Roomba on steroids.

Dick eased the door open and peered across the gloom. There were three people silhouetted by the hallway light pouring into the room.

“Jesus, shut that thing up!” another voice added. “She said this place would be empty.”

“It’s only the laser alarms. Punch in the code,” the first person grunted.

The other retorted, “What do you think I’m doing?”

After a few seconds of keypad bashing, they switched on the lights. Dick ducked away, but not before he glimpsed two men and one woman who all appeared as though they’d come back from a night at the opera. The men wore tuxedos, and the woman was in a shimmering red ballgown.

Dick edged the door closed as something bounced into the wood. The shrieking grew to an impossible volume as the alarm rebounded and headed back into the room.

“What the hell is that thing?” the woman shouted.

“Get it!” another commanded.

The trio scrambled around the room while chasing the orb-shaped device. Dick took the opportunity to reassess his way out of here. It would be impossible by now to head out into the room and sneak by the others. He could take them on all at once, but he still had the bruises from his last scrap with enemies and decided to use that option as a backup if he had no other choice.

He looked around the room and remembered the hollow wall. He ran over and knocked on the surface with his knuckles, the sound masked by the shrieking and shouting in the other room. “Here goes nothing,” he grunted as he curled his fingers into a fist and punched.

His hand met some resistance, then passed through to emptiness. He ripped his fist back through the plasterboard hidden behind the wallpaper, then punched again. After the third hole, he kicked through the wall and tore out a path large enough for him to pass.

Dick smirked. “Son of a bitch. Those cleaners were right.”

There was a passageway beyond, its edges constructed from metal like the vents, but the space large enough to walk single-file. Dick headed inside to where the darkness was all-consuming and wished he’d held onto his phone so he’d have a light source.

The shouting in the other room reached a crescendo as something knocked over and broke. Someone shouted, “Got you!” Then everything went silent.

Dick threw caution to the wind and walked into the darkness, leading with his toes and feeling with his fingers. The tunnel ran twenty feet before coming to a sharp bend to the left.
