Chapter 16

Romero

It was a few days after Kristina made her unwelcome appearance and I hadn’t heard a peep out of my in-laws. They moved their products freely in and out of the city, but I was still in a holding pattern. I couldn’t trust the Feds wouldn’t bust me. After their screw up raid last week, they were coming for me. I couldn’t give them any ammunition.

“We have a problem,” Gio said as he came into my study.

“Don’t we fucking always?” I looked up from my laptop. “What is it now?”

“The cartel won’t move anything internationally for us.”

“Why not?”

“They think we’re a liability.” Gio ran his hand through his hair. “We were late on those two shipments. The Feds are sniffing around us. No one wants any attention.”

“We were late because I used the sellers Antonio suggested and they sold me shit.” I pushed a stack of papers off my desk. “I rectified it as quickly as I could. It didn’t affect anyone’s bottom line but ours. I made up for the missed deadline.”

“I know but because of the information Lu leaked to her family, the Torrios were able to get to the cartel. That’s what they were doing in Florida last week. Word is that you dropped your guard. They know someone infiltrated your organization.”

“The Torrios used the information to undermine me with the cartel.” Fucking wonderful.

“It looks that way.”

“I need the other families on my side.” I rested my head against the back of my chair. “We need to make a bold move. I’ve let these people fuck me around long enough.”

“What did you have in mind?”

“Find out when their next shipment is.” I glanced at the doorway to find Luciana standing there. “Get back to me as soon as you know. I want to move as fast as possible.”

Gio nodded before turning and greeting her. “Hey, Lu, how’s it going?”

“Good.” When she smiled, I wanted to forget everything that was going on in my world and focus only on her. “Can I come in?”

“Of course.” I stood and came around my desk as Gio disappeared into the hall. I hoped he could get me what I needed today. I wasn’t waiting any longer. It was time for me to take charge and fix all of my mistakes I’d made the past few months.

“I hope I didn’t interrupt.”

“Not at all.” I held out my hand for hers. “What’s up?”

“So, I was wondering, well, if you’re not busy tonight.” She rocked from side to side. “I mean, I know you’re always busy, but I thought maybe…”

“Luciana, are you trying to ask me something?”

She nodded.

“Take a breath.” I kissed her knuckles. “And start over.”

“Okay.” She inhaled and slowly let it out. “You know how I’ve been learning to make gnocchi?”

“Yes, Stella says you’re doing a wonderful job.” I smiled. “Despite all of the pasta I’ve seen in the trashcan this week.”

“Well, I wanted it to be perfect.”

“I’m sure it is.”

I liked seeing her have an interest in something other than worry.
