Chapter Eighteen

With nothing but dead ends on the Stephanie Murphy front, Zara and I head back to the office to do some more research on Agent Green’s cases. Since my theory about Murphy being the link between the two victims didn’t pan out—at least not yet—we have no choice but to keep going through her case files to see if we can find anyone who looks even the least bit suspicious.

It turns out Agent Green worked mostly white-collar crime, specifically fraud cases, which makes this even more difficult. Typically, people involved in fraud don’t go out and start murdering people, even if the FBI closes in. It’s a long shot, but at this point, I’m willing to try anything.

As we work, my mind drifts back to home and what is awaiting me there. Every time I think about someone breaking into Agent Green’s apartment, my mind finds its way back to D.C. I’m desperate to call Janice for an update but stay my hand because I know that will lead nowhere good. I just can’t get over the fact someone broke into my apartment without my knowledge and set up those cameras. She must be damn good if she can get in and out of there without Timber detecting her scent, because that dog can smell a snausage from across the whole apartment.

It upsets me even more that I was so blind to it. Had I never tripped on Timber’s toy, who knows how long she could have kept an eye on me? What does she want with me? Is she spying because she’s afraid I’ll uncover something about her? Or is there another reason that I can’t even fathom? The only plus side to this is it gives Janice a reason to finally listen to me about her. I know Janice has been humoring me up to this point about the specifics of my husband’s death, and for good reason. It isn’t like I have any hard evidence. Just a coincidence and a hunch. If we can catch her, we can make her talk. And then maybe I can finally find out why she decided to destroy my life from the inside out. I trust no one else better than Janice to find this person and bring them into the light so I can finally get some answers.

“I swear, there isn’t one violent criminal in here,” Zara says, pushing herself back into her chair so hard it rolls away from her desk. “They’re all just pencil pushers and wannabe money launderers. Nothing that would indicate any of them were willing to kill to keep their operations going.”

“Maybe we need to look at associates of the people she was investigating,” I say. “Instead of the people themselves. Perhaps someone had a vested interest in one of her targets, and they got wind of what she was doing. Decided to take her out before she could disrupt their operation.”

“And don’t forget, they’re big Ruby Blackthorne fans,” Zara says with a wink. She pulls herself closer to the desk again.
