Chapter Twenty-Three

Frankie left Little Ray back at Bust-up Billiards in the middle of a game of eight-ball. The Mustang made good time through the dark streets as he brooded over the possibility that the person he’d been hired to find had killed Daisy Bradshaw.

Of course, the man who’d pushed Daisy could be a total stranger. Just a deranged individual who’d chosen the first person he’d seen.

But Frankie couldn’t help buying into Finn’s suspicion that the young woman’s death had something to do with the threats the station had been receiving.

Thinking back to his earlier run-in with Peeps, he even wondered if the little man could have driven straight from the pool hall over to the train station. Could Peeps have pushed Daisy to her death?”

The timing would have been tight, but it was possible.

He pulled the Mustang into the train station lot and saw Finn standing next to the Channel Ten van.

“I need to tell you something before we go in there,” Finn said as soon as Frankie emerged from the Mustang. “I think whoever pushed Daisy mistook her for Veronica. I think Veronica was his real target.”

“What makes you think that?” Frankie asked, trying to follow Finn’s logic. “You think because she received the threats and because she works at Channel Ten and-”

Finn nodded.

“And because Veronica dropped Daisy off at the station and loaned her a Channel Ten umbrella,” Finn continued. “That, along with her dark hair, may have convinced the man that Veronica was the one on the train platform.”

Catching sight of a black Dodge Charger pulling into the lot, Frankie turned to watch Tucker Vanzinger drive up next to him.

He bent down to greet the detective and saw Peyton sitting in the passenger seat next to him.

“What are you doing out here?” Frankie asked, unable to stop the words from falling out of his mouth.

“The chief called on all available resources,” Peyton said without looking at him. “And don’t blame Vanzinger. He tried to stop me.”

Vanzinger rolled his eyes and drove on to find an empty space.

“We have to tell them Veronica’s in danger,” Finn said as the car pulled away. “And we’re gonna have to let her know, too.”

But Vanzinger and Peyton were already making their way inside, and Frankie and Finn had to jog to catch up with them.

“Wait, I need to tell you something,” Frankie called out.

Peyton turned to him with a petulant expression.

“I’m working now,” she said, slurring her words. “So, leave me alone and let me get on with it.”

The smell of alcohol smacked him in the face as she spun around and marched toward the platform. He hurried after her and tried to take her arm, but she shrugged him off and walked to the edge of the platform, looking down at the track.

Iris Nguyen had already taken Daisy’s body away in the M.E.’s van, but a small crew was still cleaning up the grisly remains that had been left behind.

“Come away from there,” Frankie hissed in her ear. “You’ve been drinking and need to go home.
