CHAPTER SIX

“That was delicious. Thank you.”

“I’m glad you liked it.” He hadn’t tasted a bite. He was too focused on watching her eat – how her lips wrapped around the fork, how her throat moved when she swallowed. He’d had no idea how erotic watching a woman eat lunch could be. “Let’s leave the dishes for now. I want to show you something.”

She tossed her napkin on the table and took his outstretched hand. She smiled when he kissed her palm and tucked her arm into his. He started toward the master suite and she wondered what he was up to. He pulled her into the bathroom and she frowned when he leaned against the counter, crossed his arms over his chest, and smiled at her. “What?”

He jerked his head to the towels that hung on the rack.

There, hanging side by side were two towels, one black, one white with embroidery on both. She stepped closer and realized one said DAMON, the other said KIARA. She spun back to him with wide eyes.

“That way if any woman steps foot in here, she’ll know this space belongs to you and she isn’t wanted.” He strode to her and took her in his arms. “I meant what I said when I told you I don’t want anyone else, Kiara.”

“That’s very sweet,” she responded, but there was still hesitation in her voice.

“Still don’t believe me, huh?”

“It’s not that. It’s just…”

“Come here,” he said as he drew her from the bathroom into the bedroom. He sat on the bed and pulled her into his lap. He tucked her hair behind her ears and caressed her cheek. “I know it’s going to take time for you to truly believe what I’m telling you, but I promise, Kiara, you will eventually trust that what I’m saying is the truth.”

She wanted so desperately to believe him, to have faith in what he was saying, but his past kept creeping into her mind. She couldn’t ignore how he’d behaved in high school, couldn’t forget that woman that had kissed him the night before. She could only imagine all the women he’d been with over the years. The tally in high school alone was staggering and he had another decade to add onto that. All she could do was take it day by day and hope that he didn’t destroy her completely when it was all over.

“I’m trying. And, what you’ve told me, what you’ve showed me helps a great deal. But it’s hard to ignore years of evidence to the contrary.”

“I know. It took me a while to figure out that no matter how many women I slept with, no matter how many times I tried to put you out of my head with mindless sex, you were the only one I really wanted.” He pulled the strap of her dress offer her shoulder and started kissing her caramel skin. “And, no one could ever take your place in my heart.”

She hoped he wasn’t messing with her, wasn’t saying those things just to get her into bed.
