Chapter Six

Levy Washington was late for his appointment, but Sam wasn’t surprised. The kids she worked with often were. Still, Levy had missed his last two appointments and promised to be here this time for sure. It was obvious he had dropped his ridiculous plan to blackmail Mike and she had hoped that meant he was ready for serious change. In an emotionally charged conversation she’d had with him over the phone yesterday, he told her he had to make his life better or he’d die. After that, she’d been certain he would come today.

Feeling disappointed, she opened the blinds and peered outside the window of her tiny office looking for him. Right away, she saw the bodyguard Mike had hired. At six-foot four, wearing a suit, and carrying a side-arm, he tried hopelessly to blend in with all teenagers in their ripped jeans and tee-shirts, smoking and talking. Sam closed the blinds in irritation.

She’d told Mike he could hire a bodyguard, but only if he was inconspicuous. The last one wasn’t so bad, but eventually the kids started catching on to why he was always loitering around the building. She’d asked Mike to replace him, but not with this lout.

She strode outside and waved for the hulking man to follow her around the corner where the kids couldn’t overhear their conversation.

“I’m sorry, but you’ll have to leave.” She said apologetically.

The guy grabbed her roughly by the arm and escorted her further down the street and into a dark alley.

“Why is that?” his voice was deep and grumbling. Sam felt nervous, but she wasn’t about to let someone who was supposed to be working for her boyfriend know he was intimidating her.

Standing tall against him, she said “I’ve got a client coming who’s very skittish and I know he’ll just flee if he sees you standing around. Just tell Mike I need a different bodyguard; one who blends in around here better.”

“Oh, I took care of the kid and the body guard too.” The huge man indicated the dumpster in the back of the alley and for the first time Sam noticed large stains of blood on the ground. Lying nearby was a single shoe Sam recognized as the Converse’s Levy always wore.

Sam gasped and took off running, but the large man was surprisingly fast on his feet. He caught her easily and slammed her painfully against the brick wall of the building. “Did you give your boyfriend the message to share the wealth?”

Sam wanted to cry out, but she was too terrified one of the kids nearby would respond and this animal would hurt them too. So, she simply nodded her head yes.

“Good. Does he have the ten million ready to deliver?” He put his hand to her throat and began to squeeze as a means of relaying the importance of his question. Sam shook her head no emphatically.

“Why not? We gave him plenty of time to get the money ready. Perhaps he needs to know just how serious we are.
