After Terrance left the Christmas dinner, Sage and her mother stayed up talking. Her mother revealed the secret she had kept for Terrance, and Sage spoke for the first time of the secret she had been keeping. It all came tumbling out, her feelings for a boss that never seemed to notice her and her need to find a new job. She would suddenly burst into tears throughout her confessed story and wondered what was happening to her. She hadn’t felt the need to tell her mother any details of her life, until now.

Sitting on the sofa while sipping brandies, Sage blurted out, “Why now mother? Why did you help Terrance and not tell me about it?”

“Sage, you wouldn’t have let me or Terrance into your life. After your father died, you built a wall around your heart that not even I could break down. I think Terrance saw that in you and that’s why he called me. Don’t be upset.”

“I don’t know that upset is the right word. I don’t know how to describe what I feel. I don’t seem to have control of myself,” she said, bursting into tears again.

Pulling her daughter close, Marie held her tight stroking her hair. “It’s time Sage,” she sighed. “It’s time to see that you have purposely shut out the world to keep yourself safe. Once you accept that, you can move forward and open yourself to Terrance.”

Pulling back, Sage frowned when she replied, “And what about you, mother? You haven’t moved forward in your life since Daddy died.”

“I had the great love of my life, Sage. Nobody could replace your father, ever. I’m happy with my memories, my friends, and my business. But you, Sage, need a great love in your life. I think that’s what you’re missing.” She took Sage’s face in her hands and told her, “You grew up in the circle of our love, so you know what it is, and I think you miss it greatly. Your father died much too young. And you were too young to lose him.”

The truth hit Sage with a force she didn’t expect. Despair swept over her as she sobbed uncontrollably in the safety of her mother’s arms. The wall she had constructed around her heart began to crumble as she breathed in the truth of her mother’s words. Her mother, so warm and loving when she was a child, now warm and loving when she needed her most. Her mother put her to bed, just as she had when she was a child.

Sage let the tears flow into her pillow, washing away all the hurt she had collected over the years, letting the love she had for her father slowly heal her heart.
