THIRTY-FOUR

Connor watched from the shadows as the man across the road disappeared down the dark alleyway opposite. He took one last drag on his cigarette before flicking it away and crossing over. Checking no one else was headed their way, he slipped down after the man, careful not to make a sound as he quickened his pace to catch up. He reached the corner and paused, then hurried on as the man disappeared from view again. He slowed to a stop at the end of the alley and peered round.

It opened up into a backstreet car park, tall crumbling walls surrounding it, save for the entrance and row of buildings at the front. The man he’d followed stood in the middle staring at these buildings for a moment, as if assessing them. He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a gun, holding it loosely to his side.

Connor’s jaw locked grimly, but he moved forward anyway. He hadn’t come unprepared.

Silently closing the distance between them, he approached from the back. His fingers wrapped around his own gun for a moment, held tight against his back by his belt. But then he pulled his hand away and reached into his pocket instead, swiftly flicking up the Swiss army blade he kept there. A gun could be knocked away without too much risk of damage at close range. A sharp knife against soft flesh, on the other hand, held a much more immediate risk.

Creeping forward over the last few feet with cat-like precision, Connor finally reached his prey. Suddenly aware that someone or something was behind him, the man tensed and began to turn, but it was too late. Connor wrapped his arm around his neck and pressed the blade to his throat.

His eyes flashed in the darkness and his voice dropped to a low, menacing growl. ‘Give me the gun and keep your fucking mouth shut, if you want to keep breathing.’
