The rest of the week drags on. The only bright points are when I see Carmen in my intro class. She’s still shy in a way she wasn’t before that day in my office, but it’s somehow entirely charming. She was so confident before, but now she seems sweet, delicate—like something I’d do anything to protect.

I’m not normally so caveman in my attractions, but no one’s ever made me feel the way she does.

On Friday, I knock on her door at the appointed time, and she swings it open as if she’s been waiting for me.

I’m not prepared for how good she looks.

She’s wearing a black dress that clings to her curves and shows off her ample cleavage. Her thick hair is styled in loose waves, and it makes her look like a goddess. I feel my body reacting and I have to force myself to work through GDP formulas in my mind so I don’t sport an obvious erection.

I want to take that dress off her with my teeth and worship every inch of her body.

“Is it okay? I can change,” she says, looking at me nervously.

If that dress comes off, I’m going to ensure that it stays off.

“You look gorgeous,” I say. I put my hand on her waist without even realizing what I’m doing, and she leans into my touch. “Absolutely stunning.”

I have to resist the urge to pull her tight against me. If I do that, we’re never going to make it out the door.

I take Carmen’s hand and lead her to my car. When she slides into the seat, she looks like she belongs there.

I want her to belong there.

The drive to The Armadilla seems to take forever. Carmen’s dress has ridden up a bit, and I have to fight the urge to caress the smooth expanse of her thigh that’s exposed. I want to trace my fingers up the inside of her leg, tease her with what I hope to do to her later. I resist the urge, but it’s a close thing.

Every time I glance over at her, she’s watching me intently as if she can’t quite figure me out.

“Penny for your thoughts,” I say.

She laughs. “That doesn’t seem like a fair trade,” she says. “As an economist, I’d expect you not to be going around wasting your pennies like that.”

As if knowing more about her could ever be a waste.

“Are you really okay with this?” I ask her. “Things got weird in my office the other day. I hope you didn’t say yes to me out of some sense of obligation.”

She shakes her head, her curls bouncing around her face. “I just got into my head too much,” she says.

“In what way?”

She gives me another searching look. “I just realized there’s no way a man like you would flirt with someone like me.”

For a moment, I’m speechless.

“Just for the record, I was giving you my best material. If it wasn’t clear that I was flirting with you, I must be pretty bad at it.
