As the witch started stoking the fires of her oven, the music rose to a crescendo. Avi’s heart thudded to the music, and his expression mirrored Hansel and Gretel’s as they realized the witch’s culinary intentions. He stole a glance at his mother. She was watching transfixed, a slight smile on her face, her feet tapping to the music. She turned to him and picked up his arm and mimed gobbling it.

Avi snatched his arm away, heart thumping to the beat of the music. Rumela Maushi leaned across Avi and whispered, ‘Di, I’m so glad you told us to get the tickets for the play. It’s fantastic.’

Suddenly, it all made sense. That his aai had kept trying to get him to eat this whole time—it was to fatten him up, just like in the story of Hansel and Gretel. Avi felt like a leopard that had fallen into a well and was now well and truly trapped.

Right then Avi knew, he was toast (or whatever it was humans cooked other humans into).
