When Damon showed up at the hotel and knocked on their door, Zachariah was the first person on his feet to answer it. He barely took the time to peer through the peephole on the door before he flung it open, revealing his boss standing on the other side of it. He was dressed—amazingly—in jeans and a white t-shirt with a black button-up thrown on top of it, and he had a small black backpack slung onto one shoulder. A pair of black, wire-framed glasses perched on his nose. He was the very picture of casualness, an image so at odds with the way Zachariah was used to seeing him that it was baffling. He shook his surprise off and stepped aside to let the man enter.
“Thank God you made it,” he said, shutting the door behind him.
“Was there some question as to whether I would?” Damon asked. He strode into the room and set his backpack on the desk chair. He paused to look at the tablet that still lay on the desktop, partially wrapped in its black cloth.
“Not really,” Zachariah admitted. Damon glanced at Scott and Riley—who both still sat on the bed opposite Ashton—and unzipped his backpack. He pulled on a pair of latex gloves, then layered a pair of thin cotton gloves on top of them. He fastened the tiny buttons at the gloves’ wrists and folded the black cloth covering the tablet back so he could see the object within.
“What exactly is this?” Damon asked, his tone neutral. He had yet to look at Ashton, which grated on Zachariah’s nerves. He’d called him to help Ashton, not to play around with an inanimate object that could wait until they’d dealt with the more immediate, pressing problem in the room.
“It’s what I stole from Brandon’s office,” Zachariah said impatiently.
“It’s also what Ashton touched when he was possessed,” Riley spoke up. Zachariah refrained—barely—from shooting her a dirty look. If Damon was aware that the tablet was involved upfront, then he would want to examine it before doing anything else.
Sure enough, Damon turned his full attention away from Zachariah and onto Riley and prompted for her to tell him in detail what had happened. Zachariah almost growled out loud but restrained himself. He turned away from Riley and her animated explanation and looked to Scott. He still sat on the edge of the bed, giving Zachariah an understanding look. He didn’t want his understanding; he wanted to get the show on the road and get Ashton brought back to him where he belonged.
Zachariah’s attention was brought back into focus at Damon’s next words. “People cannot become possessed through an inanimate object,” he said. “It’s not possible. A demon requires a living, breathing host to survive.”
Scott spoke up then. “So that means the tablet must be something special,” he said. “Maybe it’s sort of like that box thing me and Riley liberated from Brandon’s office a few days ago.”
“Maybe,” Damon said doubtfully. He was frowning, studying the engravings on the stone tablet with a critical eye.
