Standing in the lobby of the Cirque Apartments, De’Geer looked at Cooper as they took a moment to reflect on the previous conversation.

‘Thoughts?’ he asked.

‘I don’t know anyone who, when they hear strangers have been in their apartment, just wave it off,’ Cooper muttered through clenched teeth. ‘Even the thought of someone being in my room, going through my things, wearing my underwear? Puts my teeth on edge.’

‘I don’t recall anything being said about underwear,’ De’Geer frowned.

‘Nobody ever says anything about the underwear,’ Cooper hissed. ‘But you know it happens.’

A security guard walked over to them; short and stocky, he was no more than five feet in height, but still gave the impression of someone who could hold his own, and more so, in a fight.

‘You needed to speak to me?’ he asked, suspicious, expecting to get some kind of reprimand.

‘Depends. Are you the person who deals with security footage?’

‘Aye, I am,’ the man nodded, holding a hand out. ‘Ant McGann. What do you need?’

‘CCTV footage,’ De’Geer nodded up at the camera in the corner. ‘Who controls the feed, and how can they alter it, if needed?’

‘I do, and it can’t be,’ McGann shrugged.

‘What about Cheryl Jenkins?’ Cooper asked.

At the name, Ant McGann became a little more agitated.

‘Bloody Jenkins!’ he hissed. ‘That’s the fourth time I’ve heard that name this week!’

‘You know her?’ De’Geer moved closer. ‘I understand she manages the estate?’

‘Oh, is that what she’s saying now?’ McGann shook his head. ‘Bloody woman.’

‘You’re going to need to explain yourself a little more,’ De’Geer now loomed over McGann, almost two feet higher. ‘She’s a witness in a murder investigation.’

‘Aye, I heard about that,’ McGann replied. ‘And I told the copper who asked the same thing I’ll tell you. Cheryl Jenkins used to work here about six months back, but then left. More fired, really.’

‘Fired for what?’

‘She’d squat in people’s flats,’ McGann sniffed. ‘Like, she’d find out when people were away for a couple of weeks and move in. She claimed it was a house sitting style of arrangement, but it was basically just Cheryl drinking expensive wines and taking food from people who were too rich to notice.’

He pointed up at the ceiling.

‘There’s a Russian fellow, owns the top floor. Whole thing made as a penthouse. Never visits it, maybe twice a year tops; Fashion Week and the BAFTAs, usually. Rest of the time he just has a cleaner in. Cheryl got a copy of the key and lived there for three months before someone worked it out.’

De’Geer noted this down. From the looks of things, Cheryl’s exclusive apartment wasn’t hers. Did Johnny know? Monroe had said Johnny claimed to be paying the rent; was Cheryl pocketing a few grand a month while lying to her boyfriend?

‘What was her job?’ Cooper asked. ‘While she was here?’

‘She manned the security desk,’ McGann scratched at his neck. ‘Some owners have Wi-Fi CCTV in their properties, so she would deal with them, show them their cloud footage if an alarm went off, all that stuff.
