Chapter 12
Whatever energy reserves I drew upon to hold the séance and help Irene crossover are severely depleted. When we pull up in front of Yoloâs house, Iâm barely able to keep my eyes open.
âHey, after you walk her to the door, will you drive us home?â
Stellen nods. âSure. Yeah, right.â
Lucky for him, I gave him the idea to walk her to the door. I donât think it had actually occurred to the sweet, innocent kid.
He hops out and opens the door for her, and she struggles to climb out of the back seat without releasing her hold on Bricklin. I have a feeling she wonât be putting that dog down for a couple of days, at least. If Stellen doesnât watch out, that little pupper might be a third-wheel on their Valentineâs date.
He steadies her on the icy sidewalk and helps her up the cement stairs in front of the simple wooden door on the small white ranch-style home.
Before he can muster the courage to kiss her good night, the porch light flips on and a worried mother, followed by an angry father, spill out of the home.
Heated and distressed voices swirl to an increasing volume. I hop out of the Jeep and rush to my brotherâs aid.
Possibly because of my exhaustion, or more likely due to my unshakable clumsiness, I slip on the ice and go down hard on my backside. Thankfully, Iâve got plenty of padding.
The upside of my accident is that it silences all parties.
From my vantage point on the ground, I chuckle and call out to the parents. âPlease excuse my fantastic entrance. Iâm Mitzy Moon, owner of the Bell, Book & Candle Bookshop downtown. We were helping Yolo look for her lost dog, and Iâm afraid time got away from us. But the good news is, we found the dog!â
Both concerned parents ask their daughter several questions, and she happily confirms my clever lie while I get to my feet.
As I approach the tense scene on the crowded front stoop, an odd thought pops into my head. In all honesty, it seems a claircognizant message. âAdopted.â As I glance back and forth from Yoloâs mother to her father, I find no traits in common with their elfin daughter. These are both solid, broad humans of some Nordic or possibly Germanic descent. Their hair is a similar shade of mousy brown, and their eyes are the plain sheen of weak coffee. As I examine the visible effects of their DNA, I canât find a single chromosome appearing on the small lavender-topped human in our midst.
I offer my hand to the father, and he hesitantly reciprocates. âMitzy Moon, you say?â
âThatâs right, sir. Iâm well acquainted with Sheriff Harper, if you need to check my references. Let me start by apologizing for losing track of time. And I wish Iâd thought to have Yolo give you a call or text. Thatâs definitely on me. I hope you wonât hold it against the kids.â Look at me, being all grown up and taking responsibility.
