The first previous landowner Doug met with was Muriel Harrison. She worked at a restaurant in a downtown Los Angeles hotel. When Doug found out where she worked, he was skeptical. There was no way she made the money Mr. Miller suggested she had by working there. She had to be making money some other way, and he felt it was not as a waitress.

He made a call to the number and chatted with the woman for a moment. When he asked if she could come down to his hotel, he thought she would get angry and hang up on him. But she only chuckled and asked for the name of his hotel and his room number. He gave her the room number. It was the same hotel she claimed to work at.

He wasn’t judging her. The world forced many people into unfortunate circumstances, making them feel less than what they were, and he would restore as much as he could without diminishing the person’s worth or the choice they may have been forced to make. He needed to know whether she wanted the land back before telling her it was possible. If she didn’t, he would try to find another buyer.

He opened the door when Muriel Harrison knocked. He ushered her to the cream-colored sofa in the room as he looked her over with a smile on his face. She looked as tall as he remembered, and her skin still looked smooth and youthful. He wasn’t too surprised. She ought to be very young still—mid-thirties at most. He had known her as Muriel Cassidy since the Harrisons had married after Doug left town.

“You look beautiful,” he said.

“Thank you,” she said, spinning around, so her dress swirled around her. She met his eyes before glancing away again. With a deep breath, she reached for the hem of her dress, starting to slide it up her legs.

“No. No, hold on a moment. Would you mind if we talk a little first? I will definitely pay for the time we spend together here,” Doug stated.

“Wait, do I know you?” the woman asked, studying his features.

“I have one of those recognizable faces. People tend to feel the way you feel right now when I walk into a room,” he said, staring into her face.

“Yeah, maybe that’s it,” she said, taking a seat on the couch while Doug perched on the bed.

“I just came out of a boring and tedious meeting, and I was hoping to enjoy the company of someone who isn’t going to talk shop for at least an hour,” he said.

“You do look like one of the CEO types. I’m sorry you have to sit through all those long meetings and all. I could never do it.”

“You look like a business-minded woman. I mean, you were ready to get down to business immediately only moments ago. You don’t seem to have time for frivolities,” Doug said.

“Does that make one a CEO?” she asked.

“I guess not, but it definitely helps along the way.
